What's On Your Plate???

Lunch Friday, a perfectly-done oyster po-boy from a top-notch, white-tablecloth Cajun place:

I haven't been to this place in a couple of years, since back when it had a different name. There's a story behind it: (I won't name any names but anyone with a little bit of internet research skills and the right motivation can figure them out.)

Once upon a time, there was a married couple. They opened a Cajun restaurant, with the husband as the head chef and the wife running the front and hostessing. It was very popular, but after a number of years, they sold it and moved on. Then some time later, they opened another Cajun restaurant, and the same thing happened - success, then after some number of years they sold. I don't know why they kept following that pattern; it was like they got bored with doing it then sold, then got bored with not doing it and started another.

After, I don't know, like 20 years doing this, they were now on their 3rd or 4th go-around. The latest place was a small establishment in a strip center, but it was business as usual - if you don't get there early, expect a massive wait. The wife still hostessing - her signature was to dress like she was trolling for Johns, though her figure no longer really pulled it off. The husband still the head chef, thanking customers from behind the line as they left. The Wife and I, along with some "foodie" friends, ate there quite often.

Then one day it was closed. And there was a story in the news. Murder-suicide, the perp being the husband. If the motive was ever determined, I never heard it. No "happily ever after" to their story.

They had a very loyal staff, with servers and cooks following them from place to place over the years. After the tragedy, some of them got together and bought that last place. They changed the name and remodeled a bit but the menu was mostly the same.

I could never talk The Wife into going there, though - you see, she's a little funny about death (whole other story). After it happened, she had a nightmare that the husband had done it at the restaurant (it actually happened at their home) and then turned her into meatballs and served them to their customers. Honestly, that's what she dreamed. And she wouldn't even look at a meatball, much less eat one, for almost a year afterwards (I had fun messing with her at Ikea). And no way was she going back to that restaurant, to this day.

But we recently moved offices; our new location is close to this place, so on Friday I felt like some fried oysters and went on in. The menu still had some old favorites but it had changed more from the old one. And there's one new dish in particular under their entrees. A dish named in honor of the deceased wife. No, it didn't have meatballs in it...

You may remember a post of mine from a couple of months ago about one of our favorite Cantonese places having to close because their landlord didn't renew their lease and instead sold the property to some Johnny-Dallas developer. Last night we tried a new (to us) place that a waiter at that old place had recommended.

Some giant fried oysters:

Whole steamed fish (still alive when we ordered it). Unlike the old place, it wasn't served on a mini-chafing dish to keep it warm; otherwise it was good. There also was a combo plate of crispy skin roasted pork and BBQ duck; the pic I took of that is too blurry to post but you can see a little of it above the steamed fish:

This was some kind of giant clam (not a geoduck) that was also live when we ordered it, about a pound worth of meat. It was The Wife's favorite of the meal:
