What's On Your Plate???

Some 10.5 years ago I had the chance to work for a week in our then Berlin office. I’d already lived in Germany once by then, but had never visited Berlin so I jumped at the chance. (Little did I know that, another 5 months on, I’d actually be living in Berlin but that’s another story...).

So ahead of time I decided to check out some restaurants (yeah, that’s not a new thing). One was a forgettable sushi place near Wittenbergplatz, long since closed. Others I forget. Except one. I found what seemed a very authentic place serving kushiage near Savignyplatz, Kushinoya.

I went once, loved it. So when I was living here, I went every week. I’ve had kushiage in Japan. It’s not any better. Mostly it’s worse. Besides, Kushinoya’s sister restaurants are both in Japan too.

I went back today. Still love it. Stuffed my face in fact. Kushiage are little tiny morsels on skewers, breaded and fried. At last count tonight, I had... many. Yes, many will do.

Here’s how it works. You get two trays. One in front of you with an array of sauces and condiments. One empty one on the shelf with, importantly, the same number of segments as the saucy one. The chef places each kushi in the segment that corresponds to the suggested sauce you eat it with. It’s quite clever.

Tonight’s restaurant is in the Michelin Guide too. Not with any stars this time, but with a Bib Gourmand. It’s an award they give restaurants that haven’t quite reached 1* level but still deserve recognition for serving good food, which must be below a certain price level. Given that was nearly £70, those levels must be quite generous!

Restaurant is Lucky Leek, a bit further into Prenzlauer Berg than I think I’ve been before. Nice wide avenues in that area, in a quiet street, it’s nicely situated.

I’m not sold on the name. You might not be sold on the fact it’s a vegan restaurant! For me as a veggie, that can make compromises I wouldn’t normally make but actually the food was great.
