Calamari is never on my no list. It is not a shellfish![]()
Actually, squid are considered shellfish, in a culinary sense. Oysters, mussels, clams, scallops, shrimp, prawns, lobsters, crawfish, crabs, cuttlefish, octopus, squid, and others are considered shellfish, lacking bones and scales.
Biologically, the relationship is very, very distant. Shrimp, crab, lobster, crawfish are crustaceans under the class Malacostraca, which is under the phylum Arthropoda, which also includes insects and spiders.
Squid, cuttlefish, and octopus are under the class Cephalopoda, which is under the phylum Mollusca, which also includes bivalves like oysters, mussels, clams, and scallops.
Really, you have to go to the next level above phylum, which is kingdom, to find the common rank for squid and shrimp of Animalia. Which also includes us.
So, oysters and scallops are much more closely related to squid than are the shrimp that you're allergic to...
