I love a good CFS smothered in country gravy...

Chicken fried steak is an Americanized version of the schnitzel, which originated in Austria and was brought over here by German immigrants. CFS is regular beef and a schnitzel can be many different kinds of meat, but the popular wiener schnitzel is made from veal. The country gravy is an American thing; original wiener schnitzel is served without any kind of gravy.

But then here in America you have the fast food chain Wienerschnitzel, which confusingly doesn't actually serve any schnitzel, wiener schnitzel or otherwise, instead serves hotdogs. Which leads many to think a wiener schnitzel is some kind of hotdog which actually they're completely unrelated. They chose that company name because they thought it sounded neat. SMH.

I can't roll my eyes hard enough whilst simultaneously giving the requisite amount of side eye for that...

I think the Wienerwald restaurant chain had the same problem in the US. It's a fried chicken place rather than serving schnitzel (sit down but still fast food) but the assumption in the US was the same. It's not like hot dogs are even called Wiener in most of Europe....
