Kokoro Collection – What Happened to the Tokyo Olympic Oakleys Explained

Find out why the Kokoro Collection means Oakley may not release a Tokyo Olympic Line for the 2021 Games!

The world is in a weird place right now and the Olympics are no exception. After last year’s events, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics were rescheduled. Now they’ve been rebranded to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics set to take place nearly a year later. While there’s still speculation of whether the Olympics will get moved again, it left us with the big question – Will there be an Olympic Oakley Collection?

The Kokoro Collection and Olympic Oakleys That Never Were

In order to answer that question, we’ll need to rewind. Leading up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic start, Oakley collaborated with Brooklyn-based artist Meguru Yamaguchi. He worked with the brand to design sunglasses and goggles for the games. However after the original 2020 start date was moved, Oakley made a bold move to release the line anyways.

Launched in Summer 2020 and re-branded as the Kokoro collection. These are actually the Tokyo Olympic line that never was. Kokoro – a Japanese word meaning “heart, mind, spirit” fits well for the Olympic theme. And we’re definitely not complaining about these awesome frames.

The Kokoro Collection features bright colors of Pink, Blue, Purple and White in a splatter meets camo-type design. In some ways it reminds us of the Night Camo Monster Dogs, others the Atmos Splatter Jawbone. Keep scrolling for complete pictures of the line.

Complete Kokoro Collection

The Kokoro collection includes Frogskins, Radar EV Path, Flak 2.0 XL, Jawbreaker, Sutro, EVZero Blades, Flight Jacket, Radarlock (Asia Fit), Flak 2.0 (Asia Fit) and Airbrak MTB Goggles. Also be sure to check out or complete guide to Oakley’s Asia Fit and the science behind it here!

But Will There Be A Oakley Tokyo Olympic Line in 2021?

This is the real question. Now nearly a year later, will Oakley release an entirely new line for the 2021 Tokyo Olympic games? Our guess – No. Due to the significant effort and time that goes into collaborating and designing an entire collection for the games, we don’t anticipate a whole new line. You may see some of the new sports pairs like the Kato or Plazma

It made sense for Oakley to release the Kokoro collection in the summer of 2020 rather than just sitting on what we imagine is a stockpile of frames. And for the 2021 games, we’d predict they’ll double down on the Kokoro collection pushing the line leading up to the games. Though they’ll likely wait until the start date is confirmed.
