American Tariffs and Import Fee's

Sooooo I just ran into our new and old tariff/import fee laws and paid a hefty one on used Oakleys and here is how it went down. Avoid my mistakes I stumbled into...

(NOTE: I am going to ask we stay on topic and the topic is tariffs/fees that must be paid on incoming purchases from overseas NOT the POLITICS of it.)

So in other words if you wish to express anger at our political parties there are threads here for that but lets not make this one of them. This is to pass along information so we can navigate the new and old systems and share our experiences to learn from them and save ourselves money.

So I do shop many markets and this one came out of Japan. I usually buy for a month at a time then consolidate all the items into one package and have it shipped. Not one time in 3 years have I EVER had to pay a tariff/fee.

That all changed with this last box. When it hit customs I got a notification that my shipment was being held because they needed information and here is what I had to provide in order to get it out of customs...
1. My personal information, Full name, address, email, for verification
2. MY EFFING Social Security # WTF? I felt super uncomfortable putting that in a message box and sending it...
3. Drop ball certificate for Lux... I will provide the other thread where these can be found at the end of this. It has to be in a PDF format so you will either need to get that or convert the .jpg to .pdf to send it.
4. Oakleys manufacturer address for each item listed on the way bill. This I had to explain the items were made it America and sold in Japan then I am purchasing them as used items and having them shipped back. The place and address of manufacturer for those specific items does not exist anymore now that Lux owns them. This had to be explained 3 times before they accepted my answer though I think they just ended up using Lux's address on the drop ball certificate.

In the end and after two days of getting information passed back and forth I got the bill this morning and paid $80 to get the package released from customs. 😫

You can avoid all of this by keeping your packages values below the $800 mark and I will moving forward but I figured I would share this so anyone else who shops markets outside of the USA can avoid having to pay the fee I had to. Pretty much you are held hostage to the process because if the package went back to where I got it from that would have been a huge mess with paypal cases being filed for each item and I am not sure if I would have gotten my money back. Plus these are some items you simply do not see on the American market so I would have lost them.

So here are the drop ball forms you will need on this thread...

It's always been under 800 dollars and you are in the clear.

"Welcome to the club..."
I live in Hungary - so if You sell me any O stuff for 100 USD: I have to pay for it 100 USD + ~ 25 USD (shipping cost) + (100+25)*0,27 + (100+25)*0,05 = 165 USD
Soooo Your 100 $ cost 165 $ for me...
(I really hate this...)

+
We don't have that 800 USD limit: WE HAVE ONLY ~ 50 USD

A lot of countries have that exemption. Oakley has made me an expert on this . It sucks royally for collectors around the globe.

If you think that's bad... Brazil is worse. Have made a lot of trades with Brazilian friends and it's expensive.

The total taxes is extra on top of everything you already paid (the item, shipping, packaging, etc)

I can relate. I purchased a pair of Oakleys on ebay that came from Japan. Got held up in customs and the seller had to provide more information. They got what they needed and it finally showed up 2 weeks later. Well, last week I got a bill in the mail from FEDEX for $44 for Tariff fees. How convenient . Why wasn't this included in the initial sale so I was aware of it. I will not be ordering from overseas for a few years.

I learned that one the same way as well ordering from ebay... Kinda pi$$es me off the seller used Fed Ex who is one of the only shippers to require all these certificates and crap. DHL usually handles lower than $800 stuff without hitting you with a bill later... Pay it cause I was irritated enough to throw the bill on my dresser and not pay it and it went to collections.

YES THIS HERE!!! ALWAYS ALWAYS try to use DHL when ordering from overseas. It's a bit more expensive, but SOOOO worth it

Or if not, have them use their national mailing service / ECMS since once it arrives in the states USPS delivers it, and they don't require anything extra as FedEx or UPS does.
