I have recently been exposed to the world of Lego and how crazy (and awesome) some people are... I can actually say to my wife now "At least its just a couple hundred pairs of glasses, rather than LEGO" as a friend from our little town is apparently pretty epic in the lego world. He downplays it and is very humble but he built the "Pillar of Autumn". You can google and see it. Just the math and planning took 3 years before he even started building it!

There's a lot of AFOLs (Adult Fans Of LEGO) that do amazing builds of art using LEGO bricks -- Ohio's Buckeye Stadium, Harry Potter's Hogwarts Castle, Lord of the Ring's Minas Tirith and battle of Helm's Deep complete with hundreds of elves and uruk-hais, Star Wars' AT-AT LEGO Ideas - UCS All Terrain Armoured Transport

Those are just a few examples of what AFOLs spend thousands of dollars a lot of their time in making their own creations. There's also a lot of shows around the world to showcase your creation's too. And if you are really good, LEGO will offer you a job to be one of their designers, but you have to move to Denmark .

Yeah they go to Chicago every year - dad and son drive as they can't get it on a plane and mom and daughter fly (because they can't fit 4 passengers and the lego in a vehicle!). I would love to be the customs guy when they cross the border!

just random question do they enter into contests and win prizes or do they just do it all for fun?

is there a market to sell these to people or do they keep it or break it down for parts?

i love me some lego and this skill is beyond what i could ever do but i find it all very interesting

I think he has won some sort of award along the way but I don't think they're really competitions - just a bunch of lego heads getting together. I really don't know anything though. The only thing I collect is Oakley and the only other thing I'm into is coffee. No time for anything else.

It is all for fun. And awards are for reps and bragging rights.
