Oakley Re: Sub Zero Sunglasses Review

For our review, we got our hands on a pair of Re:Sub Zero’s with a Carbon Fiber frame and Prizm Ruby Lenses (Product Link). And while these may not be everyone’s cup of tea, we love the radical design and what these mean for Oakley’s future.

Initial Impressions, Frame, and Design

Leveraging PhysioMorphic Geometry™, which “enables eyewear to be designed without limitations”, the unique shield lens shape is etched to give it a dual-lens aesthetic – reminiscent of the original style. And when you first look at these sunglasses, your eyes are instantly drawn to the circular lenses.

The lens design and aesthetic reminds us of the Oakley Over The Top, with its rounded shape and out-of-this-world look. And we’re not complaining.

Oakley Re:Sub Zero sunglasses are the perfect mix of style and function. The sleek, futuristic design is eye-catching and stylish, while the strong yet light O Matter frame material and Unobtainium earsocks and nose pads provide a no-slip grip, even when sweating. This is the Oakley innovation we know and love.

Sub Zero Prizm Lenses

After a week of wearing Oakley Re: Sub Zero sunglasses with Prizm Ruby lenses, you realize the lenses make this pair. And that’s because the design centers around the Sub Zero’s lenses – I mean the lenses are about 75% of the frame!

And the Re: Sub Zero provides plenty of coverage thanks to those large lenses. We’ve already reviewed Oakley Prizm Ruby lenses, so I won’t go into too much detail here, but it’s a lot of fun to see these lenses in an old-school design.

But our favorite part of this release is a colorway featuring Prizm Dark Golf lenses. Let’s take a moment to appreciate the dark humor of Oakley’s design team with this one. Sure, Oakley is pushing the Re:Sub Zero as a sports performance pair. Now, is that what most people will wear them for? No, people will mainly use them as a fashion statement.

But if you expect the Re: Sub Zero to be used for sports, it’s probably for running or cycling (where wild designs are not uncommon). And where’s the last place you would expect to see this design – a golf course! This is why it’s even more fun that Oakley has pushed the envelope, suggesting you could use the new Re: Sub Zero sunglasses in one of the most conservative environments in sports. We love it, Oakley, and here’s to hoping Bubba Watson is rocking a pair on tour!

You’ll also find the new Sub Zero available in Prizm Sapphire, Prizm Black, and Prizm Dark Golf lenses.

Our Review – Are They Worth It?

The Oakley Re:Sub Zero is the perfect pair of sunglasses for those who want to make a statement. With its unique shield lens shape and dual-lens design, these sunglasses are sure to turn heads. And because they’re made with PhysioMorphic Geometry, you can be sure that they’ll be comfortable to wear all day long.

So if you’re looking for a pair of sunglasses that will help you stand out from the crowd, Oakley Re:Sub Zero sunglasses are a perfect choice.

Overall had a great time with the Sub Zero, and while it wouldn’t be our go-to sunglasses every day, it’s definitely a fun pair when you’re looking to stand out. And as Oakley continues to build out its MUZM lineup with amazing sunglasses, including the recent Xeus releases, we say full steam ahead!

The days of disruptive design, cheeky colorways, and head-turning sunglasses seem to be creeping back into the halls of Oakley.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where to Buy Oakley Re: Sub Zero sunglasses?

The Oakley Re:Sub Zero is available now for a limited time at Oakley.com and select retailers worldwide (Product Link), retailing for $244.

Since this is a limited edition pair of sunglasses, we wouldn’t expect to see these trading for under retail price. In fact, we already spotted a few pairs up on eBay selling for 10-20% above retail price (not sure why considering the Re:Sub Zero is still available from Oakley directly for less).

How do the Oakley Re:Sub Zero sunglasses perform in different activities?

Oakley is strongly suggesting the new Sub Zero’s could be your next sports pair with its Dark Prizm Golf lens and an athlete-based marketing campaign. While we view the Sub Zero as more of a lifestyle and make a statement pair of sunglasses, we didn’t have any issue wearing them during running or golf.

The nosepads performed just as well as other Oakley sunglasses, and while we still prefer a frame with interchangeable lenses for sports, the Sub Zero has something fun about it. Especially running errands, these glasses more than perform and definitely turn heads.

Are Replacement Re:Sub Zero lenses Available?

Currently, replacement Re:Sub Zero lenses are not available. But despite the unique frameless design, it’s fairly easy to remove the Re:Sub Zero lenses following the steps below:

  1. Remove the two screws behind the logo on each earstem that connects the lens to the frame.
  2. Slide the lens out from each earstem, releasing the lens
  3. Insert the new lens into each earstems and secure with the screws removed in step 1
