What Exactly is Oakley O Matter? Everything You Need to Know

Oakley O Matter material makes up some of the most popular sunglasses today like the Gascan and Holbrooks.

But what exactly is “O Matter” and what does it actually do for your sunglasses? Well, the answer is part science, part marketing but overall pretty simple.

Keep reading for everything you need to know about this innovative lens technology!

What is Oakley O Matter?

Oakley O Matter is a patented Nylon composite used in sunglasses and goggles frames. O Matter is durable, flexible, and sweat resistant.

Oakley is known for its endless jargon for the materials and technology used in its sunglasses. O Matter is simply the trademarked marketing term Oakley has come up with for the material.

We’ve already created this easy quick reference guide for the most common Oakley terms, so be sure to check it out if you’re feeling lost in the O-universe.

How Does Oakley use Nylon in O Matter?

O Matter is an Oakley patented Nylon composite.

In the simplest explanation, Nylon is a plastic material that is lightweight and strong. It rose to popularity in clothing such as stockings for its ability to be flexible but not rip and tear.

Obviously, the Oakley Nylon is a bit different than stockings – but the underlying material is the same.

Is O Matter Durable?

Yes, As a Nylon plastic O Matter is extremely durable. However, like any material it has its limits.

O Matter is a thermoplastic, meaning when heat is applied it becomes softer. But once cooled it will return to a solid-state again.

Similarly, when exposed to cold, the material will become more brittle.

Original vs. New O-Matter

Early Oakley sunglasses such as the Eyeshade and Blades are more prone to cracking and brittle effects over time.

However, in 2000, Oakley enhanced the O Matter formula for increased flexibility, durability, and longevity. Bottom line, unless you have 20+-year-old Oakleys they will stand up just fine!

How to Adjust Oakley O Matter?

Thanks to Oakley O Matter frames flexibility you can adjust them within reason using heat.

Note: This is not recommended, and we’d suggest visiting your local Oakley or Vault store for any adjustments.

But if you’re brave enough, you can try heating your frame up slightly with a hairdryer or similar method and slightly bending the frame.

Again, it’s important to reiterate that is method is risky and you do risk breaking your frame trying to adjust your frame.

What Oakleys are available with O Matter?

Almost all of Oakley’s sunglasses today are made with this proprietary material. In the past we saw other materials used such as X-Metal, however today O Matter is the go-to.

There is one major exception here – Prescription Eyeglasses.

Many of Oakley’s eyeglasses and eyewear are still made of titanium or other alloys – similar to most other eyeglasses on the market here.

Where to Buy O Matter Sunglasses?

You can buy O Matter frames and sunglasses directly from Oakley’s site and authorized retailers.

But if you’re looking to save, your best option is typically aftermarket sites like our Oakley Forum Exchange or eBay. You can usually find 30%+ off O Matter frames like Frogskins through these sites where you can buy, sell and trade with other members.

Hi, thanks for your time.
I have a question:
What do you think about presciption Eyeglasess on O Matter material? is it recommended?

If O-Matter is partly Nylon based, then does that mean when you go out hiking, hunting, fishing/etc/etc that it would be bad to have DEET based repellant near it? I use Picaridin based repellent already because it won't eat away at nylon-based fabrics or my camera lens coating/etc like DEET will.

There are a lot of Prescription glasses in Oakley's catalog that are o-matter frames, about 79 choices to be exact (including the Holbrook).

The material is pretty rigid just being worn, but can withstand the slight bends and what not on the models that are designed to have their lens interchanged (not sure if this is recommended to be done with prescription lenses or if the mount is any different). They even have Flak 2.0 XL available for prescription.

I have a pair of Oakley Batwolf, and they keep falling off, and are now scratched as a result. At what’s temperature doesn’t the frame become mouldable? I want to reshape them stay on better.

Get a frame that has unobtanium earsocks an/or nosebombs and that will solve your problem. There are a few pairs that are similar to a batwolf but have the rubber on the frame.
I’ve never had a frame fall off that had earsocks and nosebombs including on rollercoasters
