Yep, I snipe bid (manually) as @kronin323 suggests, so it's not possible to get caught up in a bidding war (on eBay at least, in auctions where a bid extends the duration, it can still happen).
No room for remorse either, you put your max in and you either won or you didn't.
It was a case of "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" as I was losing all my early attempts at buying to last minute snipes, so had to adapt my tactics. The one drawback is it does leave you exposed to sellers who are willing to end early so you don't get that chance to snipe. That seems more prevalent now than it was.
