Oakley CMDN Sunglasses | Review & Guide

What are Oakley CMDN Sunglasses?

Originally surfacing in July 2021, the Oakley CMDN sunglasses are a part of the Q3 2021 release cycle.

The name “CMDN” is a shortened reference similar to other releases like the HSTN and NXTLVL.

While it’s not clear exactly what CMDN means, our best guess is “Comedown”. But let us know in the comments if you have any better guesses.

Keep reading for our full Oakley CMDN review and when you can expect these sunglasses to hit store shelves.

Frame and Design

From the first look, you instantly know the Oakley CMDN sunglasses are not for everyone.

These sunglasses feature a large O-Matter full-frame shield style lens with a fashion-forward design. And they definitely stand out.

Starting with the lens frame, these are a narrow and wide design that looks a bit “funky”. And yes that seems like the best word to describe them.

This design is carried through to the trigger earstems, similar to what we’ve seen on the Oakley Deadbolt and HSTN.

It also appears like this frame will include some version of Switchlock technology through the latch under the bridge.

Overall, Oakley is clearly appealing to the young fashion-forward crowd with the CMDN. But as Oakley Forum members pointed out, these sunglasses appear very similar to Arnette Shield Sunglasses (pictured below).

And it should be no surprise to anyone that both Arnette and Oakley are owned by the same parent company, Luxottica.

Lenses

As we mentioned above, the Oakley CMDN lenses are a large single shield for maximum visibility.

While the shield lens may help Oakley market this pair as a cycling frame, it’s equally a fashion statement that makes these sunglasses pop.

Whether these are your style or not, there’s no second-guessing that the lens design definitely jumps out at you.

And similar to other recent Oakley releases, every CMDN colorway will contain Oakley Prizm lenses.

We’ve already covered why we love these contrast-enhancing lenses so we’re excited to continue to see these introduced in performance lifestyle frames.

Keep reading for our final thoughts and whether these sunglasses are worth your money.

Our Review – Are They Worth It?

If you’re looking for a unique, modern, fashion-forward (potentially cycling frame?), then go for it. Otherwise, the CMDN will likely be a pass for most traditional Oakley buyers.

We’ve already seen the reaction of forum members to the CMDN, and it indicated this likely won’t be a top seller for Oakley.

But people equally had similar initial reactions to the Sutro when they first released. So only time will tell.

At the end of the day, if you like a pair of sunglasses, buy them, enjoy them and never look back.

Are Replacement CMDN Lenses Available?

Yes, replacement CMDN lenses will likely be available through Oakley.

As we mentioned above, it appears the CMDN sunglasses feature Switchlock technology that allows for quick and easy lens changes.

Typically Oakley sells several replacement lens options for sunglasses with Switchlock.

We’d expect replacement lenses to sell for $80+ based on similar frames available.

But if you’re looking to save, you’re not out of luck. You can find replacement lenses available from several aftermarket retailers, often as low as $10.

I dig these. They’re 90s as hell.
I do see the retro appeal but where are the sexy curves of Oakley? Luxotica has begun crossing styles with its brands and I feel this style can be found closely related to others already out there. I am sure they will find their niche and I can see them on the ski slopes being popular so if it makes em a buck or two more the power to them. I guess my fear is with Lux owning correction ... monopolizing the sunglass industry it will all mold into one basic design style separated by brand labels. Hope I am wrong but when I see on another thread what could be moons close cousin from the same daddy being produced in a likeness on another label it makes me nervous.

It has already been foreseen.

This is something I'm biting my tongue on. I don't like how it looks in pictures, but it could very well rub off different in person.

I’m not going to lie the frame colors and such look like cool combos... but I’m not sure on the frame itself. Should of expanded the sutro to a Sutro triggered and involved the cool color ways.
