Oakley Kato and Kato X Sunglasses | Review and Guide

The Oakley Kato sunglasses are finally here and we’ve got everything to know about this frame. Plus our complete Oakley Kato and Kato X review!

Background and Release

The Oakley Kato Sunglasses debuted during the 2020 SuperBowl on the face of now MVP Patrick Mahomes (pictured below).

In January 2020, we started hearing rumors of the Oakley Kato’s appearing in stores. First, we saw the Kato Sunglasses appear on the SunglassHut website online. Then shortly after we saw several reports of readers and members being able to order the Kato in-store at SGH locations. But unfortunately, all of these orders were canceled within 24 hours of placing them.

Then, in February 2020, Oakley officially released the Super Bowl LV edition Kato Sunglasses on their website. And it seemed like the frame would finally release. But Oakley made us continue to wait for over a year!

Finally after continued speculation of whether this frame would ever launch, in May 2021 Oakley officially released the Kato Sunglasses!

You can see also see the wild Kato design in action in this video below captured by Youtube user “MouseSteps” of Patrick Mahomes at Disney wearing the frame. And keep reading for our complete Oakley Kato review. Plus a breakdown of the Kato and Kato X Models!

Frame and Design

The Kato introduces an entirely new frame and design. The overall construction is impressive – even before we start talking about the lens. The ear steams connect directly to the lens, maximizing the viewable area for performance. Additionally, they feature metal/24K icons adding a pop to the design. But the real focus for the Kato is on the perfect fit. Keep reading for how Oakley is making the Kato fit for any and every size face!

First, the Kato sunglasses come with 3 Unobtanium nosepads of varying sizes. Each nosepad has a different thickness and depth to fit small, medium, and large-size faces and noses. Oakley has offered something similar with Asian Fit nosepads in the past but this usually wasn’t standard. Regardless, we love this feature!

But it’s really the Adjustable Rake that takes the “perfect fit” to another level.

Adjustable Rake

One of the biggest features of the Oakley Kato is the new Adjustable Rake. This tilting mechanism (highlighted in the picture below) is designed to provide a “mask-like fit” as advertised by Oakley. Basically, this feature allows you to change the angle between the lens and earstems to fit your face.

Overall this is an awesome feature. And for any serious cyclists, finding the perfect fit is key! Clearly, with the Kato’s unique lens design that wraps around the nose, this frame is made to be worn as close to your face as possible!

Size and Dimensions

The Oakley Kato X is a large frame with an oversized look. We’ve included the complete size and dimensions below:

  • Lens Width: 149mm
  • Lens Height: 64mm
  • Temple Length: 136 mm

Lens

Likely the first difference you’ll notice about the Oakley Kato sunglasses is the wild lens design. Unlike previous shield lenses which are similar to a football visor design. The Kato lens contours around the nosepad providing maximum viewability and coverage for peripheral vision. This is a first of its kind of lens from Oakley!

All of the Kato colorways are available with contrast-enhancing Prizm lenses. But if you’re buying this frame for cycling you’ll likely want to focus on the Prizm Road lens. Built specifically for cycling, running and road conditions, this is one of our favorite Prizm lenses. You can read more in our complete Oakley Prizm Road Review.

Frame and Design

The Oakley Kato X frame is similar to the Kato but with some key differences. The first and most obvious is the change to the nose piece which pops out less from the frame on the X. Compare this to the Kato’s protruding nose that is much more obvious.

The Kato X does still have the Unobtanium earstems and full-size nosepads so there shouldn’t be much of a difference in terms of grip. Plus this pair still has the new Adjustable rake found on the Kato frame to adjust your lens for the perfect fit!

As mentioned above the Oakley Kato X Lens is the main difference between the pairs. While the Kato X still has a large single visor Plutonite lens, the pushed-out nose piece is subdued on the X. The Kato X will however still be available in a variety of Prizm Lenses which gear the frame toward sports and cycling.

Are Kato Replacement Lenses Available?

Unfortunately No, You can not replace Oakley Kato lenses due to the unique design of the frame. Oakley’s top sports pairs such as the Jawbreaker, Flight Jacket, and Flak Jackets all have the ability the swap lenses for the right conditions. So it would make sense to see this feature in the Kato. But this is not the case.

We have seen some lenses appear on eBay and other sites but they appear to be forcefully removed from the original frame and not typical.

Where to Buy Oakley Kato and Kato X Sunglasses?

While the original murmurs were for the Kato and Kato X to be released in Summer 2020, no one anticipated Oakley waiting until May 2021 to finally release this frame. So if you’re itching to buy one, you’re in luck. You can find the Kato (Product Link) and Kato X (Product Link) online.

Due to the initial demand, it’s unlikely to find this frame discontinued for the first few months. But it’s not uncommon to find 20-30% off retail prices through aftermarket sites like the Oakley Forum Exchange or eBay. Final Thoughts

The Kato line brings back the days of disruptive design, so we are all for it. And with its Adjustable Rake and different nosepad sizes, Oakley is clearly changing it up. This is the innovation we love to see from Oakley. And while we’d rather not wait for 2 years after the first pair leaks, this frame definitely needs to be worth the hype.

The arms being attached directly to the lens is pretty cool. Eager to see where they fold up? And which nose piece they chose under the lens.
