Oakley HSTN Sunglasses | Review and Guide

Oakley HSTN sunglasses are one of the latest styles offering a round and modern design. But with other similar round styles like the Oakley Latch and Deadbolt, we were interested to see how these stack up!

Keep reading for our complete Oakley HSTN sunglasses review and everything to know about this frame.

Naming

While we haven’t officially heard what “HSTN” means, we assume it’s a shortened name similar to the Oakley NXTLVL.

Our best guess is “HSTN” means “Hasten” referring to being quick. But this would be an interesting name choice since this is a lifestyle frame and not a sports performance design.

Our Gear

For our review, we got our hands on a pair of Oakley HSTN sunglasses with Prizm Ruby lenses. And while these Oakley sunglasses impressed us, they still might not be our first choice. Let’s explain why.

Frame and Design

The Oakley HSTN features a unique modern design with rounded lenses that cut off towards the nose. This is an almost identical lens shape as the Oakley Clifden, but the lenses are actually different sizes. Regardless we love Oakley’s combination of sharp edges and rounded corners in this frame.

As we move to the earstems, you immediately notice the famous trigger design inspired by Oakley’s Razor Blades frame. This design refers to the sharp dip in the middle of the stem. And you’ll also find the same earstems design on the Oakley CMDN that was released alongside this frame.

The HSTN frame itself is made of lightweight O Matter material that’s durable and comfortable.

HSTN vs. Deadbolt

Overall the HSTN is a modern design that looks like an O Matter version of the Deadbolt. Especially since both frames share almost identical characteristics.

The main difference is that the Deadbolt features fully round lenses compared to the HSTN’s round cutoff lenses similar to the Clifden.

Prizm Lenses

Similar to other modern Oakley releases, the HSTN features contrast-enhancing Prizm lenses.

Over the last two years, Oakley has made a big push for Prizm lenses to be the standard lifestyle lens and not just sports specific. And since we’ve loved Prizm lenses since their launch so you won’t hear any complaints from us.

From wearing the HSTN over a few days, we found the lenses a bit small. But since Oakley advertises the HSTN as a gender-neutral sunglass, the lens size is likely part of a broader appeal. Still, we’d love to see Oakley offer this frame in two different sizes with a large option for bigger heads.

Now let’s look at colorways available, including some awesome lenses like Prizm Violet and Prizm Sapphire.

Our Thoughts – Are They Worth It?

The Oakley HSTN sunglasses are definitely a fashion frame, so whether they’re worth it or not will depend on your style. But this frame still confuses us a bit. Was there really such demand for the Deadbolt that Oakley wanted to create an O Matter version? Also, why is an O Matter frame in a lifestyle design needed?

We’d likely pick the Oakley Deadbolt (full review here) over the HSTN since the Deadbolt’s metal frame adds to the design more than O Matter. But if you prefer an O Matter design, you’ll want to check out the HSTN.

Will Replacement HSTN Lenses be Available?

Yes, Oakley HSTN replacement lenses are available – but not from Oakley. Confused? We’ll explain.

Almost every pair of modern Oakleys features replaceable lenses. You can read exactly how to swap lenses in almost every frame type in our complete step-by-step guide to changing lenses.

But just because the lenses are replaceable doesn’t mean Oakley will sell replacement lenses.

Over the past few years, Oakley has slowly moved away from selling replacement lenses for non-sport sunglasses.

But you’re not out of luck. You can still buy replacement lenses from several aftermarket retailers online. For more information, read our full Oakley Replacement Lens Guide and Comparison.

Where to Buy Oakley HSTN Sunglasses?

Since the Oakley HSTN’s release in September 2021, you can now find these sunglasses on Oakley’s website (Product Link) or through their authorized retailers.

But before you buy, be sure to check out our complete guide to Oakley’s annual sales schedule to see how you can save 30-50% off!

And even if Oakley isn’t running a sale, you can still often save 30%+ off new Oakleys through aftermarket sites like our Oakley Forum Exchange. For more information, check out our guide to Never Pay Retail Again for Oakleys.
