Oakley Prescription Eyeglasses Buyer’s Guide

When buying Oakley prescription glasses, you’ll want to focus on 3 key elements:

  • Frame material and features
  • Lens type
  • Lens thickness and coatings

Now let’s jump into each of these elements and what you should look for when buying!

Frame Material

When it comes to buying Oakley eyeglasses, you have three choices of frame material — O Matter, C-5 Alloy, and Titanium:

  • O Matter is a propriety polycarbonate plastic that is strong, durable, and lightweight.
  • C-5 Alloy is the patented five-metal material that is lightweight and durable. This material is typically found on wire frame Oakleys.
  • Titanium is a light and durable frame material made of titanium metal. Titanium frames often also feature C-5 alloy material.

All three materials highlighted are excellent choices for your Oakley glasses. Overall, we’d recommend O Matter if you have a more active lifestyle, while C-5 alloy and titanium are great for a more professional look.

Frame and Earstems Features

Along with their frame materials, Oakley eyeglasses also include features to provide you with all-day comfort and the perfect fit. Here are the features you should know about:

  • Hollowpoint Hinges feature an empty or hollow center for easier movement and flexibility at the temple.
  • Ace Fit Temples are flexible ear stems that can be heated and molded by a professional for the perfect fit.
  • TruBridge technology offers four interchangeable nose bridges to fit different nose shapes and sizes.
  • Monoshock Hinges feature a single “tine” (a small metal piece) that bridges the frame and earstems.

These feature will vary by frame, but these are great to keep in mind as you’re going through the buying process.

Lenses

Oakley eyewear leads the industry in lens technology. And their eyeglasses are no exception! You can currently buy Oakley eyeglasses with single vision, bifocal, or progressive lenses.

And Oakley lenses are available in two different options – True Digital and Prizm lenses. We’ll review each below:

True Digital vs. Prizm Prescription Lenses

  • True Digital lenses are Oakley’s standard prescription lens for everyday wear. These lenses optimize vision and decrease peripheral distortion and glare to reduce eyestrain.
  • Prizm Gaming lenses enhance contrast and offer blue light filtering to decrease eye fatigue when staring at your screen all day. Originally designed for e-sports Prizm Gaming is also great for anyone in front of a computer all day!

Overall True Digital Oakley lenses will be fine for most people. And they tend to be a bit easier on the wallet. But if you struggle with headaches and migraines from staring at your computer all day, Prizm Gaming may be right for you!

Lens Thicknesses and Material

Depending on your prescription, the thickness of your lenses may vary. But luckily, you have several options.

  • Oakley Authentic Slim lenses are a basic shatter-resistant lightweight plastic for between +/-2.00 prescriptions. These are also the least expensive option.
  • Plutonite Premium Thin lenses are made of Oakley’s patented impact-resistant polycarbonate. They add even more optical clarity and are often chosen by people who play sports.
  • O Authentic Extra Thin lenses are for stronger prescriptions, +/- 4.00 or more. They are still lightweight and resist breaking. Generally, these are the most expensive option.

It’s also important to note that Plutonite Premium Thin lenses are the only lens that Oakley offers with Transitions (or Photochromic lenses). It is also the same material used for Prizm Gaming lenses.

Lens Treatments

To enhance and protect your lenses, Oakley offers several coatings. These coatings are often included for free when you buy direct from Oakley:

  • Anti-scratch protection provides a thin coating to provide even more durability to your lenses. But it’s important to know that no lens is ever scratch proof even with anti-scratch coatings.
  • UV protection filters out 100% of harmful UVA, UVB and UVC light plus blue light up to 400nm.
  • Oakley Clarity is an anti-reflective treatment that helps to reflect sunlight and reduce smudging from oil and grease on your fingers.
