Cutting Lenses - What Works

Just made a trip out to the oakley store with Romeo lenses. Didn't have time to check much but they had Big Taco Polarized replacement lenses in stock and it's a perfect doner. It's probably got 1-2 mm extra width on each side and there is lots of room to avoid the Polarized etching which would allow you to rotate the lens a bit to get the polarization right... but looking at the polarization of the lenses, better be sure that you have an exact match to the horizontal line of the doner polar lens to the old lens. If you take a pair of properly OEM mounted polar lenses, you will see that if you look at an LCD/LED computer screen and rotate them clockwise, they get dimmer but if you rotate the counter clockwise they get lighter... so that means the proper rotation / angle is somewhere in between... I wouldn't know how to make sure it was 100% perfect so beware if you are going to attempt to cut them yourself!

Excellent work! THANKS

I am still waiting for a pair of gold iridiums to pop up for sale for my r2's... Don't want to buy Linegear but it is starting to look like the only alternative...
DO NOT buy LIne Gear, Thier lenses are horrible optically, they are DISPLAY only, sorry had to say it, but pictures talk louder than words.
Here is a shot of them through a Stellar Projector

and how many times does Jim or many of us others have to say, anything aftermarket is just plain inferior? lol I have seen the laser tests, impact tests, and many others on high end alternatives down to the ebay ****. They really are all just that. But just like the home boys here in so cal who buy a nice ride ans stick on all the Pep Boys BS trim, light up vinyl stickered carbon fiber shifters, and put the coffee can noise pipes on em, there will be people who buy this cheap ass trash and stick in their nice Oakley frames. I just don't get it at all. Never will...I'd rather be kicked in the nuts like in a bad episode of Jackass than put that **** in my Oakleys. Just saying.

Can you do another shot with an Oakley lens? Just to see the difference cause being a photographer, I'm damn particular with clarity of optics that I use and so far, I haven't got any problem with LG lenses. They are as close as the original. Just a tad inferior. Just a tad... :)

Where are the pics with the Oakley lens and no lens for comparison. I like the concept, but it would be nice to see the others for a better effect.

Just some info for lens cutters re: Polarized lenses. I've been reading that uncut lenses usually come with 180 degree marks so you can align them prior to cutting and surfacing the lens. The industry standard is that polarized lenses need to be within 3 degrees of perfect alignmnet before the person begins to feel physical discomfort using polarized lenses. Assume that the doner lenses are likely within 1 degree of perfect alignment so ensure that you line up the target lens as close as possible comparing the doner frame and target frame.

Trust me I would love to be able to get a set of Oakley lenses for my R2 but I don't see that happening. Are you cutting R2 lenses these days? I really like wearing my R2's but the lens scratch is killing me and I have yet to see a single pair of Oakley gold iridium lenses pop up for the R2...

I have yet to find a suitable donor lens from Oakley. Taco is the largest lens I have messed with for the most part, and is still like 6mm too narrow to work properly. I have seen guys cut shield lenses, and while they may fit, they don't work right. Shield lens has wrap but no rake, spherical lens (what comes in R2) has both wrap and rake, meaning curves both vertical and horizontal vs just horizontal, so the lens is flat and generally touches the eyelashes of anyone wearing them

Guys, I am working with Chop on making a thread that cover all of this. Ok so maybe I should have put oakley lens pic directly besides, cause I was comparing them, but here are two of them side by side. The thread that will be constrcuted will cover all apsects OPTICALLY that involve what we do in making lenses. I am sure some of it will be controversial. I also know why the the LineGear image is so bad. That will likely be explained also. If you look at the images where the type of lens is written below, you will see that the picture is in focus.

The projector magnifies what is viewed from the lens. Look at the LETTER 'z' and compare images:
