So they only allow it with apps, but not what’s considered web apps / service workers.

Essentially the world is moving away from needing a stand-alone app for websites and instead to embedding that functionality to web pages which are mobile friendly and responsive.

In the android browser, one can allow the site to send push notifications. Does Safari not allow this?

Pretty sure it’s to keep it in their “walled garden”.

So Apple has always said to be an app on iOS you must go through their App Store and its a lengthy process with a lot of restrictions such as it can’t just be a web wrapper - meaning we can’t just make an OForum app that looks identical to our mobile site but with push and what not. They want a standalone unique app - most agree this is dumb in a world where websites are mobile friendly. But this is how they keep control - to be on iPhone you have to go through them.

Android takes a more Wild West approach - you want to make an app, put it in the store and whoever downloads it well that’s on them. So they have no issue with the service workers and allowing push through browsers.

I think Apple may cave in the coming years as the argument against mobile websites is really thinning.

Apps for mobile used to be necessary as most websites weren't mobile friendly. That hasn't been the case in a while now. Mobile friendly is most definitely the hard trajectory and Apple is lagging behind as per usual

On the other hand, most sites that have an app tend to push users to the app. Some sites actually limit functionality on mobile devices. You either go to an app or you force desktop mode.

Either way, change doesn't have to be bad. Lol

Like most things in life, change is what you make it. If you choose to grumble and fight the change you'll never see the potential benefits of said change. I see most things as potential opportunities, but I am also an optimist

I don't have to like it. But you adapt or you die. Or you be the change.

Not currently, have some ideas - more to come there hopefully.
