Oakley EVZero Blades Sunglasses | Review

Introduced in 2019, the Oakley EVZero Blades sunglasses are described as a combination of the futuristic EVZero and vintage Razor Blades styles. These definitely play into the fast shades trend like the Eye Jacket Redux. And if you told us otherwise we’d believe they were from the ’80s!

Keep reading for our complete EVZero Blades review and why the lens is the highlight of these sunglasses!

Frame and Design

The first thing you’ll notice about the EVZero Blades is the fully frameless design. It’s futuristic and retro all in one.

And combined with the medium wrap the large shield lens actually provides great coverage. Because of the frameless design, the earstems attach directly to the shield at the temple.

Like most performance lifestyle Oakleys the frame is made of lightweight O Matter material. Plus combined with the frameless design this frame is even lighter than most other popular Oakleys.

On the temples and nosepads, you’ll find Unobtainium for added grip. This helps to prevent your sunglasses from slipping off your face even when wet or sweaty.

The stems also feature a classic ellipsis O icon similar to what you’d find on Radars.

The EVZero Blades design diverges from styles like the EVZero Path with its visor shape. Created with an eye toward streetwear, the lens is sleek.

Overall the EVZero Blades are fashion-forward and a bit less sporty than pairs like the Kato or Plazma.

But if that’s the trend you’re looking to hit you’ll likely enjoy this frame. Otherwise, there are plenty of other performance lifestyle and sports frames that are likely your speed!

Size and Dimensions

The Oakley EVZero Blades sunglasses are a medium frame that will look best on medium and large heads and faces. For more information on sizing, check out our complete Oakley Sunglasses Size Guide!

  • Frame Width: 138mm
  • Lens Width: 38mm
  • Lens Height: 52mm
  • Temple Length: 138mm

Lenses

The EVZero Blades lens obviously makes up a large part of this design. The single toric shield and nosepad are really the only things you can see looking at the front of this frame. But this futuristic design also has some benefits.

The lens itself is made of impact-resistant Plutonite material, which is standard for new Oakleys. They also offer 100% UVA, UVB, and UVC protection along with blue light protection up to 400nm.

EVZero Blades are currently only available with Prizm lenses. We’ve already talked about how great contrast-enhancing Prizm lenses are in our guide here.

But needless to say, we love seeing them in pairs like the EVZero Blades. Plus with colors like Prizm Road and Prizm Trail, they’re built for activity.

Now, what really makes EVZero Blades ideal for running, biking or any other sports is the maximum coverage. The futuristic frameless lens isn’t just for style, it’s also very practical. Removing the frame opens up peripheral vision on all sides of this lens.

We tested this during a Saturday bike ride and were actually surprised by how well the frame worked.

We’d still likely pick a cycling-specific frame like the Encoder, or Jawbreaker over these. But this frame will work well for someone looking for a fast shades style to work on and off their bike.

Are Replacement EVZero Blades Lenses Available?

Yes, EVZero Blades replacement lenses are available. But the answer is a bit complicated.

Currently, Oakley does not sell EVZero Blades replacement lenses directly. However, you can find a few aftermarket retailers selling them or some lenses on eBay.

Be sure to do your research and understand what to look for when buying replacement lenses.

To remove EVZero Blades lenses, simply pull apart the lens where it meets the earstems in the corner. This will require a firm grip so proceed with caution. But it can be done.

Where to Buy Oakley EVZero Blades Sunglasses?

EVZero Blades are currently for sale on Oakley’s site and at authorized retailers starting at $184. Unless you’re able to find an Oakley sale or have a coupon you may want to look online.

You can often find current Oakleys online for 20-30% retail prices with very little work. Take a look at aftermarket sites like our Oakley Forum Exchange. And be sure to check out our complete guide to Never Pay Retail Again for Oakleys!

Final Thoughts

Oakley EVZero Blades sunglasses feel amazing on your face. Super lightweight, frameless, and with an Unobtainium nose piece, they’re very comfortable.

While this frame’s design definitely isn’t for anyone we can still appreciate the slick look. Plus the frameless visor lens works well for cycling and running.

Looks like less coverage than the EVZero Stride and Range, but more than the Path and Pitch, plus no funky etched lines to get in your field of view, swing and a hit for me.

Fogging won't be a problem, with no frame to block airflow EV zeros are all pretty breezy.

The fact that the EVZero Blades ventilate more by design is very interesting. I’m certainly going to check these out as an alternative for my Jawbreakers on humid days.

It's an "each to their own" thing, but I wouldn't be surprised if these had no performance-minded development, and just exist for any customers drawn to retro appeal. Maybe, and I mean maybe it can work better for certain face shapes, but the Path and Range cuts were already carefully shaped in some facially anatomic fashion.

At this point, the only thing that would impress the more established Oakley crowd is the return of using premium materials. O-Matter is functionally more practical but there's only so many ways to reinvent the wheel, so business is just down to experimenting with aesthetic. Water is wet, but most pairs sold are ones most people don't even need.

With “premium materials” do you mean carbon or something else?
