... or it will snap off one half of the peg. I'm all for spreading the peg a little to get some play in the clip but to ask the pegs to do all the work expanding the C clip is asking for trouble.

Absolutely could happen, no doubt about that. I have done it several times with no issue. I try to be as gentle as possible. Like I said, lots of ways to do it, but it is always a PITA... Good luck saulsaul!

Used a cutter blade and nose tweezers. Super slowly and carefully with tape to protect frame and lens.
I acknowledge the proper tools would have made it easier!
