Oakley Double Edge Sunglasses Review

Frame and Design

The Oakley Double Edge is a large, bold, rectangular frame with a big wrap. Overall, the frame has a sporty look, but is still built for daily wear.

The frame is made of Oakley’s flexible O Matter material. It’s lightweight and comfortable with a three-point fit that feels great on your face. The earstems are a medium width at the front and taper back getting smaller over your ears.

You won’t find Unobtainium earstems on this frame, but this is in line with Oakley lifestyle pairs like the Gascan. However, you will still find Unobtainium nose pads for added grip.

Overall the Double Edge is a fairly minimalist style, without crazy planes or edges. The design reminds us a bit of the Jury sunglasses from a decade ago but plainer. It seems like the real statement here is the size, with deep lenses and a big wrap.

Keep reading as we review just how big this frame is!

Size and Dimensions

The Oakley Double Edge size shows that they are not fooling around when they say this style fits big heads. These are big glasses, both in width and lens height:

  • Frame Width: 140 mm
  • Lens Width: 66 mm
  • Lens Height: 43 mm
  • Bridge: 17 mm
  • Temple Length: 126 mm

Lenses

Oakley Double Edge lenses are made of patented Plutonite material. Plutonite meets ANSI Z87.1 standards for impact resistance. Plus they also filter out 100% of UVA, UVB, UVC rays, and blue light up to 400 nm. This means your eyes are protected from just about anything that gets thrown at them!

Because of the Double Edge’s big wrap and size, this frame has fantastic peripheral vision and coverage. Honestly, it’s almost similar to what you’d find on a visor lens like the Radar.

Currently, Double Edge lenses are available with a range of options. This includes Oakley Double Edge Prizm lenses that leverage Oakley’s proprietary technology to increase contrast and color. Prizm lenses are also available in polarized and iridium coatings. And similar to the Split Shot, you can find Prizm Deep Water and Shallow Water lenses available in this frame. These are perfect for boating, fishing, or any activity on the water.

Are Replacement Double Edge Lenses Available?

Yes, currently you can buy Double Edge replacement lenses directly through Oakley (Product Link). Currently they retail between $80 and $110 a pair depending on the type of lenses with Prizm, Prizm Polarized and HD Polarized options available.

If you’re looking to save you’ll want to check out aftermarket replacement lenses which you can find for more than 50% off the retail cost of Oakley lenses. You won’t find Prizm replacement lenses from aftermarket suppliers since these are proprietary technology. But you can find similar alternatives. Where to Buy Double Edge Sunglasses?

The Double Edge has been around since 2017 so you have a lot of purchase options. Oakley carries several different lens configurations on its site (Product Link). We’ve also spotted the Double Edge at some Oakley Vault locations, so you may be able to save.

You’ll also want to take a look on aftermarket exchanges like our Oakley Forum Exchange or eBay. For current pairs, you can often find these frames for 20-30% retail. From a quick search, we found several pairs of Double Edge sunglasses for $130-$150, compared to the $200 retail price direct through Oakley. For more information check out our guide to never paying retail for Oakleys again.

Final Thoughts

The Oakley Double Edge is a simple frame for big heads. It’s a performance lifestyle design that offers the latest in Oakley technology for everyday wear.

The overall look of the Double Edge is minimal with Oakley’s high-tech lenses adding to the contemporary appeal. If you’re an old-school Oakley fan you won’t find much disruptive design here.

Same here. For some reason, it piqued my interest. I even stopped my search for an Eyepatch2 because I like the lens choices that come with the DE better.
I just would have preferd the one with Prizm black to be a flat black frame not polished.

But i am going to pick up at least one of these, and i wish the come in the ocp program too.

I figured I would find a post about this model instead of making a new one, Went to the Oakley Vault locally, and they told me the DE lens would fit perfectly for my EP2's.

Going to definitely look into some new lenses.

Just saw a review of the new Double Edge and it seems like it is as big as the EP/2 and BT with 66mm x 43mm lenses. If it is indeed 8 base, there is hope yet for R1 owners to get newer Prizm lenses.
It's a twin toric lens.

Could I bug @Chris A Hardaway to educate us on the real life differences and ramifications of utilising such a lens for X-metals?
