History and Release

Since the first lifestyle design arrived in 1985 (the iconic Frogskins) Oakley has been committed to pursuing everyday styles along with its innovative sports performance designs for both men and women. Released in March of 2021, the Oakley Spindrift sunglasses continue this tradition bringing an updated Women’s frame to the market.

Oakley Spindrift Sunglasses Review

Frame and Design

We reviewed a pair of Matte Clear Spindrift sunglasses with Prizm Sapphire lenses. And despite this pair’s simple design, it definitely has some tricks up its sleeve.

When you first put on the Spindrift you instantly notice how lightweight the frame is thanks to the O Matter material it’s made out of. Even compared to other popular O Matter frames like the Gascan, this frame still felt lighter.

The design of the Spindrift is definitely an appeal to a modern fashion crowd. Featuring round lenses and a slightly protruding, stylized temple. This frame looks more like something you’d see on the pages of GQ than in Oakley’s lineup.

One interesting but simple element of the Spindrift is the Oakley lettering on the earstems. Unlike most Oakley sunglasses, the Spindrift does not have an Oakley O icon. Instead, the entire word “OAKLEY” is inset into the left stem similar to the iconic Frogskins (but in a different font).

The earstems themselves are simple and actually share their design with the Leadline and Manorburn.

Overall the Spindrift frame is a clean, modern, relatively simple lifestyle frame. And while its billed as a Women’s frame the Spindrift is definitely a modern look that can easily double as unisex.

Size and Fit

Overall the Spindrift is a small to medium-sized frame. We’ve included the complete size and dimensions below for reference:

  • Frame Width: 131mm
  • Lens Width: 52mm
  • Lens Height: 47mm
  • Bridge: 21mm
  • Temple Length: 137mm

Lenses

As we mentioned above, the Spindrift lenses are a round design that definitely feels modern from the first look. The almost perfectly round lenses remind us of the out-of-this-world Mars and the more recent Diecutter, though with a very everyday feel.

Just like we saw in the Savitar and Manorburn, all of the lenses currently available with the Spindrift feature contrast-enhancing Prizm technology. We’ve already covered how we love Prizm lenses, so we won’t go into too much detail here.

We expect Oakley to continue to push on Prizm lenses in just about every frame they release including both lifestyle and performance models.

Additionally, Spindrift prescription lenses are available through the Oakley Eyeglasses collection. Check out our guide for more information on ordering Oakley prescription glasses and sunglasses.

Final Thoughts – Are They Worth It?

The Spindrift is a simple, classic, thoughtfully designed style that is versatile enough to be used in either sunglasses or eyeglasses.

While they’re part of the Women’s collection, this is honestly a frame we see more as unisex. These aren’t an overly feminine frame like the classic Darts, thanks to the clean design.

Overall we’d recommend the Spindrift for any men or women looking for a small, modern, lightweight frame. Keep reading as we cover the available colorways and how you can save up to 30% when you buy!

Are Spindrift Replacement Lenses Available?

No, replacement Spindrift lenses are not currently available through Oakley or aftermarket suppliers.

Unfortunately, this isn’t uncommon for lifestyle pairs released in the last few years. But we do expect that in the next few months, aftermarket suppliers will start to offer replacement Spindrift lenses for sale. Typically these retail for under $30 a set, depending on the retailer.

Be sure to also read more in our guide comparing the Best Oakley Replacement Lenses including aftermarket retailers.
